The First Week of our Advanced Evenings Course

Tuesday 22nd
Ready, steady, go...!
We have just started our advanced course.
Our conversation topic was immigration. we focused on immigration in the USA at the beginning of the 20th Century. We read about Ellis Island, the gate to the American Dream. We learnt about the tough situations of three immigrants told by Commissioners in charge of their cases And now let’s start.
Do you think you could sum up these stories?
What would your answer to the question “What in a century will it all amount to” be?
(The question refers to the text on p. 9, “Tales from Ellis Island.”)
We revised how to agree and disagree using no only me , too/ me, neither, but also so do I /nor – neither do I
Things in common
Things different
Juan’s been to Russia, and so have I.
He’s tried snowboarding, but I haven’t.
He likes jazz, and I do, too.
He comes from a big family, but I don’t.
He doesn’t smoke, and neither do I.
He didn’t see the film, but I did.
He isn’t married, and nor am I.
He hasn’t been to Paris. I have, though.
He can’t drive, and I can’t, either.

Finally, we learnt to use reduced infinitives when the meaning is clear from the context.
Which words are omitted after to at the end of these sentences?
“Your mother doesn’t know how to read.”I said, “That’s right. She never learnt to.”
They said she had to take a text for reading. So one uncle said, “Does she have to?”
Quite exhausting for the first class, don’t you think? Let’s call it a day = let`s finish / this is all for today.

Thursday 24th
Hello again!
Ready to work hard?
Through questions and answers we found out information about Iris Murdoch, the
Irish novelist who suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease.
(Look out for the word order in question formation!!)
We tried to widen our vocabulary with synonyms or near synonyms of faith, skilled, persuade ,to lie, tactics, carefully, annoying, very important, dangerous, scared, expanding our thesaurus.
Can you remember some of the words? Go ahead!
We did a quiz based on popular belief. After checking our responses, we realized How ridiculous ideas we had!
Do you remember more common exclamations with What and How?
